BOYS WINTER TRACK: SWR places third in county, RP senior wins high jump

The Shoreham-Wading River boys winter track team placed third in Thursday's small school county championship, totaling 39 points to finish behind Hills West and Bayport-Blue Point. Hills West won its sixth straight title with 103 points.

The Wildcats had three second-place finishers. John Lee ran 4 minutes, 38.77 seconds in the 1,600 to finish behind Dan Denis of Bayport-Blue Point. Alec Baron jumped 41 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the triple jump for second place and Erik Anderson cleared 6-0 in the high jump for second place.

In the 3,200 James Hunt ran 10:00.5 for third place, topping his seed time by 1 1/2 seconds. In the 55-meter hurdles Jesse Feinberg ran 8.8 for sixth place.

The Wildcats' 4 x 200 relay team of Baron, Brett Miller, Ben Quinn and John Mattia took second in 1:38.88. Hills West won the relay in 1:36.13.

Rocky Point senior Brandon Loomis won the high jump, clearing 6-06. Last year he finished second in the high jump at 6-02 in the small school championship.

Loomis will face strong competition at Tuesday's state qualifier. West Babylon senior Lionel Fontaine cleared 6-07 at the large school championship and has a seed of 6-08. Drayke Jackson of Northport is also in the mix, having cleared 6-05 at the large school championship, three inches better than his seed.

Loomis missed qualifying for the state meet last year during in the indoor season when he placed third at the qualifier. Fontaine was first last year at 6-04.

In the long jump Rocky Point junior Kevin Vasko placed fourth (20-09 1/2).

Mount Sinai and Miller Place both had one point. Mount Sinai senior Alex Guzman was sixth in the 300-dash (40.30). Miller Place sophomore Adam DeVito was sixth in the long jump (20-05 1/4).
